Newbie Guide 2.0

Welcome to the complete Newbie guide to 9Yin / Age of wushu!
This guide will provide the basic things you should know, and to start playing the game
efficiently. I say efficiently because some players that have played the game are stuck with the old ways. Since the game has released, there has been significant changes, i.e. the addition and removal of content. We will touch bases on the game for all versions, the Taiwanese version, and the North American server. (Also works for Thailand and Vietnamese servers as well)

With that being said, please select the correct links based on your current region provided in this guide.
So, let’s get down to it, Jianghu Noobz!

Here is a little link collection so you can find what you are looking for, if you only need specific info:

Major and Key differences between Versions
(Click each to see the differences list)

NA / TH / VN Version

  • Not fully up to date compared to Native CN/TW versions.
  • (NA specific, not sure about TH and VN) Permanent Hermit, and Inner 6 Boost Events.
  • Just received (or on route to) Kunlun, and Tianya schools.
  • Still have access to Qingyao Palace, Delighful Island, Silver Hook, Wuji Island and the Eastern Seas.
  • Just received (or on route to) 6th Inner Rework Skill.
  • Items and Cash shop sets are not as easily obtained anymore, and gold shop updates are scarcer. Permanent windrider item is also not available in these servers yet.
  • Instances (Dungeons) drop loot bags upon defeating the boss.

Taiwan and Mainland China Versions

  • Most up to date servers in the game in terms of content.
  • Qingyao Palace, Delightful Island, Silver Hook, Wuji Island, and Eastern Seas has been removed entirely, and have been replaced with the new Jinwu Island.
  • Has permanent windrider item, and cash shop sets are in a constant rotation.
  • Some pieces of jade gear are given to you for free upon playing the game consistently and reaching a certain level.
  • New NPC in main schools that you can interact with to receive the 5th set of your school.
  • Instance loot reworked completely. Instances now give points (higher and lower pts), which are redeemed for loot of your choice.
  • Server wide events are a norm, providing all players with plenty of freebies like free disguise packs, cultivation, lore outfits etc.
  • Tradeable VIP token is available in Cash shop, so players can purchase VIP from other players.

The differences between the regions are plenty, BUT the basics of the game are entirely the same at this point. The only decision the player needs to make essentially is whether or not it’s worth it to sacrifice your ping for up-to-date content.

Before starting to even play the game effectively, there are a few things you will want to get before you start.

Getting into the right Mindset

9Yin / Age of Wushu is not your typical MMORPG. The game uses a cultivation system instead of the traditional “murder mobs and level up” Model.
The game is strictly time based in all aspects of strength development.

For example:
Inner 6 without any boosting event, takes roughly 1.5 months to farm all the necessary material, AND cultivate it to level 49.
Developing a character takes time, especially doing it efficiently, but because of this, it makes the game very relaxed and there is no rush to the finish line.
That said, THERE IS NO FINISH LINE. Just a never-ending development process, which we will converse about later as well.

Jianghu VIP

Jianghu VIP is a subscription service that provides players with the best game experience.
This game is F2D (free to download), but to play it, you will need VIP. Without it you are severely limiting your ability to play. Please consider buying it first thing. A subscription costs 30 gold on NA server, and 60 on other Asian servers. (Mainly TW and CN)
Here is the top up guide for TW Server.

Guild

Guilds in this game are like mini communities of players that you can connect with initially and have some friendly conversations with, collaborate, and even help each other out in all aspects of the game. This is your first source of in-game help/advice.

Choosing a School

In general, newbies that are super fresh often have a hard time choosing a Main School, so let me give you some advice.
The school you choose, will determine your initial play style, UNTIL you are able to build a different attack type/build. It is also not recommended to choose a subsect or faction at the start of the game, unless you know what you are doing.
To provide players with the best experience early on, play a school that catches your eye, If you play meta all the time, you will get bored and the game will become a chore, instead of a GAME. Play what you like, and like what you play!

Set yourself up for success by reading through everything, doing some minor research, and deciding the way you want to play the game. All of these are suggestions, and by no means do you have to follow anything. ALTHOUGH, you will notice difficulty fairly quickly and you probably will lose interest because of the amount of time it takes to get strong. There is a lot of eye candy in this game, and you’ll want everything, and you’ll be tempted to spend some $$$$. RESIST THE TEMPTATION! Take the tips and tricks in this guide and in other guides and create your own path that you find suits best for you!

Combat System and Character stats
(a summary of ixthUA’s Guide (With 林明美 translation) / summarized by Moai)

The purpose of this guide is to give a general understanding of character development rules, features and possibilities, as well as store all important data related to character
development.

Understanding Skill Types

Attack interrupts Feint
Parry reduces damage from Attack
Feint breaks Parry

Be sure to play around with skills and sets. Understanding the combat system to its fullest is essential, as with all other MMO’s.

Attributes

Internal Skills boosts damage of specific attribute skillsets by 16% or 20%
(this boost is not displayed in skill tooltip):
Yang/Hard internal boosts Yang/Hard skillsets damage by 20%, and Taichi skillsets by 16%;
Yin/Soft internal boosts Yin/Soft skillsets damage by 20%, and Taichi skillsets by 16%;
Taichi internal boosts Taichi skillsets damage by 20%, Yang/Hard and Yin/Soft skillsets by 16%.

Damage and Bonus Damage indicators

Scales off Melee Power and Internal Power ^

Scales off only Internal Power

Scales off only Melee Power

When you hover mouse over a skill, a tooltip description will appear on your screen. That’s where you can check what type of damage skill does (External and/or Internal).

Base Skill Damage

-The Yellow number that is shown
(including weapon base damage and weapon damage upgrades)

Base damage growth is a fixed value and is equal to lv1 skill damage * modifier.
Armor and weapons can have several upgrades to boost certain skill damage by 10% each (up to +40% damage, this boost is not displayed in skill tooltip.

Skill Attribute Bonus Damage

-Numbers are Red, Blue, or Green
Damage boost is not 1:1, it varies from 10% to more than 200% of attribute value

Weapon Manuals

The Purple number is bonus damage acquired from Weapon Manuals
Weapon Manuals (acquired through various activities) adds bonus damage to any skill using the specific weapon type.

This boost is not affected by style damage boost, it provides up to (5/8/11/16/26/38/54/86/130/194/244/295/347/400/454) damage bonus
with (1/2/4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512/600/700/800/900/1000) Weapon Manual points. You need 5023 points to cap a weapon, or 1005 Weapon Manual (Superior).

Starting from 194 bonus damage, you will have to unlock the higher values by “paying” 2million cultivation points. Also every single further point consumes 2000cultivation. So it is not advised to do this to early

Damage Types

-All skills do either External (Physical) or Internal (Elemental) damage.

Damage elements are following:
Internal Damage: Yang, Hard, Yin, Soft
External Damage: External

External Damage ignores Internal (Elemental) resistance BUT can be reduced by External Defense.
(1000 External Defense gives around 7% External Damage Reduction)

Internal Damage ignores External resistance BUT can be reduced by Internal (Elemental) resistance.
(100 Internal resistance = 10% Internal Damage reduction)

Certain meridians also give attribute to ignore specific, or all elemental resistances. Gear and treasures can have upgrades to ignore certain amount of enemy External Defense as well.

Each Internal Damage element is reduced by both general Internal resistance (from active Internal skill) and specific element.

CC Skills (Crowd Control)

CC or Charge skills lock the target, making them unable to move or act during the skill animation. These animations can cause the target to be:

Pulled: Pulls the target towards a specific area, or towards the caster
Throw: Throws the target in a specific direction
Knocked Down: Knocks the target onto the ground, leaving them vulnerable to follow up attacks
Knocked Up: Knocks the target up into the air, leaving them vulnerable to follow up attacks
Disarm: Blocks the target from using any skills that require a weapon, this does nothing against a barehanded skillset
Seal: Stops the target from using any skills for the specific timeduration
Paralyze: Stops the Target from Moving. Skills can still be used as long as they dont require any directional movement, which means mostly AOE skills still work
Stun: Stun stops the Target entirely from moving or using skills

Rigidity: This one is a weird one, cause it freezes the Target in the location but is technically not a stun and can even work on targets immun to stun. It can be more seen like a timestop (This cc is rather rare and only a handful of skills have it)
Key scrambling: Your targets directional keys get randomly switched
Blind: Your targets visible area becomes only the very surrounding of his character
Blur: The targets screen will violently shake and apply a harsh blur effect that gets stronger and weaker in rapid succession. This is most common due to drunken state which some skills can apply, but some other skills can cause this as well

-All these skills will interrupt the current target’s actions/skills, unless they have Yellow Armor (A golden like aura surrounding the player, which grants immunity from CC except stuns).

Armor Buffs (CC Immunity)

-There are 2 types of armor.
Yellow Armor: Ignores CC skills, except for stuns.
Red Armor: Ignores ALL CC skills, stuns included.

Rage Skills

-Rage skills are found in all skillsets and require rage points to use. Generally, these are the strongest skills in the entire skill set. Similar to other games utilizing “Ult, or ultimate skill.”
(Also, Rage points can be obtained by attacking a target)

How to get rage:
Parrying an attack provides 4 rage points per hit to defender and 0 rage points to attacker.
- Each hit to a non-parrying target will give 2 rage points to the attacker, and 1 rage point to defender.
- Striking multiple targets or parrying multiple strikes will give multiple rage points.
- One can accumulate a maximum of 130 rage points (higher internal rank increases limit), executing rage skill usually requires 50 points.

(If you leave combat, your rage points will be lost quickly.)

Main and Secondary Stats

Pressing the C button in game will bring up your character info panel. On the right side of this panel will list a bunch of stats. We will focus on the attributes.

Brawn points give: +1 close range (red number) might, +2 health, +1 external damage crit chance, +1 external damage per hit block energy reduction.
Dexterity points give: +1 external damage accuracy, +1 all type evasion, +1 long range (green number) might.
Breath points give: +1 internal (blue number) might, +4 EN, +1 internal damage per hit block energy reduction.
Spirit points give: +1 internal damage accuracy and crit chance, +1 energy, +0.2 internal (elemental) resistance, +0.2 energy recovery.
Stamina points give: +7 health, +0.5 block energy, +0.25 health recovery.

Meridians

Meridians are little power boosters that play a big part in your overall DPS. Each Major School has 1 meridian they specialize in, and the same goes for all Reclusive schools as well. Leveling up your Main School Internal Skills will grant you a higher version of the meridian. Initially, your meridian level cap begins at 9, and can be raised to 216.

+There are 2 versions of the Main School meridians, a Regular meridian, and a Reverse Meridian.

Regular Meridians are tied to your major school. Leveling up your main school‘s internal skills will further unlock the nodes to get a higher level for your regular school meridian.
Reverse Meridians are tied to Reclusive (Subsect) Schools. Leveling up the internal skill for the Subsect will grant you a higher level for the reverse meridian of that school.

There are also Jianghu meridians, but the base knowledge of them is not needed initially. We will touch base on them in another guide!
(Link for the guide will appear here once made (@))

How to increase your meridian level

Each inner of the Major schools unlocks a specific node on the meridian chart. The activation sequences are as follows:

+Reaching 1st internal Lv25 of specific school allows you to level up your school meridian to Lv36;
reaching Lv30 allows to activate 4th meridian.

+Reaching 2nd internal Lv20 allows you to level up your school meridian to lv72, gives 1 combo point;
reaching Lv30 allows to activate 5th meridian.

+Reaching 3rd internal Lv20 allows you to level up your school meridian to Lv108,
Gives 2 combo points; reaching Lv30 allows to activate 6th meridian.

(After unlocking meridian to Lv108 artifact attribute cap will be increased to 50, artifact MP cap increased to 334 and artifact HP cap increased to 500.)

+Reaching 4th internal Lv30 allows you to level up your school meridian to Lv144; After the server increase jianghu inner to lvl 75 allows to activate 7th meridian.

+Reaching 5th internal Lv30 allows you to level up your school meridian to Lv180 and allows to activate 8th meridian.

(After unlocking meridian to Lv180 artifact attribute cap will be increased to 120, artifact MP cap increased to 800 and artifact HP cap increased to 1200.)

+Reaching 6th Internal Lv30 allows you to level up your school meridian to Lv216

Leveling meridian is 5 times faster with VIP.

Understanding Internal Skills and your Power Level

The level of Inner Skill determines the level of your character:

– School internals tier 1-3 have maximum 36 levels, tier 4-6 have 49 levels.

– Jianghu internals have maximum 49/64/75/86 levels during inner3/inner4/inner5/inner6 server stages.

– Stats were given at the maximum internal level in the table.

– To get a school internal skill, you must join that school. Other school internal skills tier 1-3 are limited to lv30, and can be raised to 36 by utilizing big training scrolls that you receive from School instance, or script stealing.

Does Internal Skill, and your Skill set Attribute matter?

Yes it does!

Lets put the knowledge from above into an example.

If you are using a Yin/Soft internal skill, and the skill set of your choosing is a Yang/Hard attributed set, you will not get the % bonus that is provided from internal skills.

However

If you were using a Yang/Hard internal skill, and using a Yang/Hard attributed set, you will get the 20% damage bonus provided by the internal skill.

Taichi Internal Skills are the only inners that provide a % buff to any set of your choosing. Think of Taichi as a wild card, or a jack of all trades.

+The major issue with people understanding the damage system is that skill sets in this game have 2 attributes:
1st attribute is for the “Skill type”
2nd attribute is for the “Skill Damage type”

1st attribute is reliant on the Internal skill for the % Damage increase
2nd attribute is reliant on the number of stats your character has

+All External sets gain strength based on the amount of Brawn/Dexterity a player has, whilst all Internal sets gain strength based on the amount of Breath / Spirit a player has.

QUICK TIP:
If the skill says “Deals External Damage”, it will scale with either Brawn/Dexterity.

***EVERYTHING ELSE other than Brawn/Dexterity, SHOULD BE INTERNAL BASED DAMAGE and SCALES OFF BREATH.***

***Yang/Hard/Yin/Soft damage types all scale off of Breath.***

This is a lot to digest, so please read through them thoroughly whenever, or while you are playing. You won’t mess anything up, and the best learning experience is practice!
Onward to the next section!

Daily Activities (All players new and old)

Now that you are in the game, looked around at stuff, and did a few quests, let’s talk about the daily things you should be doing on a regular basis.
Below are the daily things each player should be doing in order to keep the ball rolling for their character. I will list activities that are shared amongst regions and add buttons linking you to region-based activities.

Daily Activities

Team Practice (TP-NA , TL-TW)

Team practice is one of the main activities that helps you cultivate your Inners, and skills! You can TP everyday and gain cultivation points until your meter reaches 100%
There is also a quest that will grant you the ability to cultivate a skill alongside your inner. The quest is in Suzhou. The guide to start the quest is here.

Teaching Event (aka Impart Knowledge)

Impart Knowledge is another main activity you will want to do each day if you can. This is one of the first events that you will have to show up on time for in game.
(Picture will show the server times when it is activated).
+ The rewards are extra cultivation and cultivation points, as well as “Credits” to redeem for specific items for school use, like School Certificates and Spy items that help make spying bearable.

This can be done at your school designated Impart Knowledge location, OR in Chengdu and Luoyang. The main place to do Impart is Chengdu

Spying

Spying is one of the most easy activities you can do, and it gives you school certificates. You will need ALOT of them.

The most efficient way to spy is by grabbing the weekly quest from your Headmaster; giving you tokens that can teleport you to the school required to be spied on for your quest.

The quest resets on Monday, so if you still have it in your quest log, completing last weeks quest will count as the current week’s turn in. So be sure to get them done by Monday every week!

TIPS for Spying

  • alk to headmaster to receive weekly quest for quick teleport to schools
  • Teleport to the correct school you need to spy on via your quest (Press L to view your quest log)
  • Utilize your 6th inner daily quest rewards, finishing them all gives you 4 teleport tokens that can be used to reset the cooldown
  • Break meridians, or use demon’s breath skill to drain your HP to 0 (If you don’t have tokens)
  • Use Investigate and infiltrate item if you want to finish spying fast (This method halves the number of certs you get after submitting, use this method only if you are ok with it)
  • Recover in Town to teleport you back to your school Herbal Hall (If you grabbed it, if you have not, talk to the old man in your school’s herbal hall and select “Rest Here” dialogue)
  • Run to your School Spy NPC and turn in your quest. That will complete 1 spying quest. 5 Is the maximum you can do for activity points.

Kidnapping Activity and Offline Job

Kidnapping (or Shady Trader) is an activity that involves kidnapping and offline player and selling them to NPC for money.
Offline Job is a passive activity that occurs when you are offline. You can only claim the taels at the specific times listed below:

Midnight:
0:02 – 0:03
Evening:
11:58 – 11:59
Afternoon:
19:58 – 19:59

The main purpose of these activities is to get Unbound Liang/Taels

For Taiwan and China players the activity no longer grants Taels, BUT its a free 10 Activity points for your daily accumulation. So it is still worth doing, and its easy!

Escorts

Remember I mentioned to join a guild at the start of the guide? It is for this purpose.
Escorts are one of the best ways for new players to get some skills/inners leveled up. You can escort as much as you want, but you will only get daily activity points for 5 of them.
Each escort counts as 10 activity points, granting you 50 total, which is super productive to implement in your daily routine!

Escorts also give you pills that can be used 100x daily. This is especially good for players that have level 1 skills or inners.

Demons (MD/PE/野心魔)

Demons are a daily activity that no player should skip out on. There are also 2 types of demons that you can fight. You can also invite a friend to help you defeat the demon NPC, be sure to invite strong players as you will need them!
We will go into a bit of detail below:

Wild (RE) Demon

You will notice while doing activities, or by hitting things a big red lantern will appear near your player. This is a Wild/RE Demon. Interact with it and it will transfer you to a separate instance like environment with an npc in the center. Interact with the npc to start the fight.

NOTE: WILD DEMONS ARE 3X HARDER THAN CARD DEMONS, YOU SHOULD INVITE SOMONE THAT CAN HELP YOU DEFEAT IT IF YOU CANNOT DO DECENT DPS.

Card Demon (From daily sign in)

Card Demons are easier than wild demons. You can get a summon token from the daily sign in event located inside the Red Curtain Interface.
You will need sufficient inner level to open the bag, so this way isn’t very newb friendly. Be sure to leech off players that call out in Scene or World chat for an invite!

5th Inner / 6th Inner Daily Quests

5th Inner and 6th Inner quests are some of the things you 100% want to do daily.
They grant you items that are used to get higher inner pages for your 5th and 6th internal skill, which is 100% worth it!

Jianghu hero

Jianghu hero is an activity that all players are able to access from the get-go. Its main purpose is to get an item known as Wulin books. These books are good for new players who want to start farming for late game items. You can also exchange the item for cultivation points via the Suzhou NPC “Zhou Yixian”. (Right nearby the Suzhou Mortuary)

Exploring Jianghu (EJ)

EJ is another activity that new players will have access to at the start of their journey. This activity will be worth doing when you start playing the game, as the reward box gives you 2 necessary flying skill books if you haven’t already acquired them.

+ Another thing to note is that this activity will be your primary source of Weapon manual books. These books will increase the damage dealt from a specific weapon type. They require cultivation to read so be mindful of that!
